9 Injured, Including 2 Children, in 'Random' Michigan Mass Shooting 'All Too Common,' Say Authorities

Authorities say nine people, including two children, were hurt in a “random” shooting in Michigan.

On Saturday, June 15, around 5 p.m. local time, someone with a gun opened fire at a splash pad in the Detroit suburb of Rochester Hills. Oakland County Sheriff Michael J. Bouchard confirmed this in a news conference that Clicks on Detroit recorded.

Bouchard said that police were “on the scene in two minutes” and that deputies gave the victims “emergency first aid.”

Bouchard said that eight people were then taken to the hospital. One boy, 8, was in critical condition after being shot in the head, and another boy, 4, was in stable condition after being shot in the thigh. It was said that a 39-year-old woman in their family was in serious condition.

Bouchard says that the other patients are a 39-year-old woman, a 30-year-old woman, a 30-year-old man, a 78-year-old man, a 37-year-old woman, and a 40-year-old man. All of them are thought to be in stable condition.

CBS News reports that the shooter was 42-year-old Michael William Nash, who was found dead in his home after committing suicide.

Bouchard told the news source that the killing seemed “very random” and that the suspect had “no connection to the victims.”

Bouchard told the Associated Press that the shooter is thought to have fired up to 28 shots.

It would be my worst nightmare to have to stand here again and talk about another live shooter, Bouchard said at his press conference on Saturday.

“This happens way too often in America, and it happens way too often in our community as well.” “Again, I am very, very proud of our people, even though things are very hard,” he said.

He said that the suspect “did not have a criminal history that we know of.”

At a press conference, Rochester Hills mayor Brian Barnett told WXYZ that things “have been a nightmare” since the killing.

“I’ve been blessed to be the mayor of this city for 18 years, and [I] never thought I’d see my city in the same sentence as some of the other cities that have experienced mass shootings,” said Barnett. “Whenever you have a situation like this, you are reminded of the immediate tragedy and then of course encouraged by the support of people that surround themselves almost immediately.”
