JEFFERSON COUNTY, AL – A major law enforcement initiative called “Operation Guardian Sweep” has led to 86 arrests, the seizure of drugs, weapons, and cash, and renewed commitments to regional cooperation. The operation, which took place on September 25, was a coordinated effort to target violent crime in Jefferson County and surrounding areas.
Multi-Agency Operation Targets Violent Crime
More than 180 officers from various agencies participated in the operation, including the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, Birmingham Police Department, and several other local police departments, along with support from the U.S. Marshals Service and the FBI.
Sheriff Mark Pettway emphasized the success of the operation, noting that it brought together multiple law enforcement agencies with a common goal of curbing violent crime. According to authorities, the operation resulted in 86 arrests, 221 citations, and the issuance of 696 warrants.
Major Drug and Weapon Seizures
During the sweep, law enforcement seized significant quantities of illegal substances, including 59 grams of fentanyl and 142 grams of methamphetamine. Officers also recovered a Glock 9mm handgun and more than $21,000 in cash.
Lieutenant Brandy Holmes of the sheriff’s office highlighted that the operation also included 88 sex offender verifications, which are part of ongoing efforts to ensure community safety and compliance with the law.
“These results show what we can accomplish when law enforcement agencies unite for a common purpose,” Holmes said in a statement.
Regional Collaboration and Public Trust
One of the key goals of the operation was to demonstrate the power of interagency cooperation and build public trust. Officials emphasized that the operation was not intended to be a show of force but rather a demonstration of partnership and visibility in the community.
FBI Special Agent in Charge David R. Fitzgibbons spoke about the broader strategy behind the operation, stating that it was part of a growing initiative to target organized criminal activity, including gang networks, drug trafficking, and even human trafficking and money laundering. “We will track you down, we’ll find you, and we’ll hold every single person accountable,” Fitzgibbons declared.
Local Law Enforcement’s Success
Birmingham Police Chief Michael Pickett credited the coordinated efforts of local and federal agencies for contributing to a reduction in violent crime and a quicker resolution of homicide cases. “We identify who the worst of the worst are,” he said. “We’re targeting the right people and getting them behind bars quickly.”
Officials also indicated that another joint operation is already in the planning stages ahead of the holiday season to continue efforts to maintain public safety and prevent crime.
Ongoing Commitment to Community Safety
“This partnership is ongoing,” Sheriff Pettway concluded. “We all want the very best quality of life for the citizens we serve.”
