Portland, OR – A tragic case of domestic violence unfolded in Portland when a 4-year-old girl called 911, reporting that her father had killed her mother. Neilyann Ysam, 24, was found stabbed to death on July 19, leaving her five children, all under the age of six, traumatized but unharmed.
Domestic Violence History Between Mother and Father
According to court documents, Ysam had previously fled from her alleged abuser, 28-year-old S Mate Joseph, after years of domestic violence. The couple’s history of abuse dates back to 2019, when Joseph pleaded guilty to assaulting Ysam while she was pregnant.
Reports from that incident in Vancouver, Washington, described Ysam as “barefoot, screaming, crying, and attempting to get away” from Joseph. Two men had waited outside for police when confronted by Joseph’s 16-year-old brother, who allegedly threatened them with a knife. The teenager was ultimately shot and killed by officers, while Joseph was taken down with a stun gun and arrested. He later served 11 days in jail after pleading guilty to assault in the fourth degree, harassment, and jumping bail.
The Fatal Incident in Portland
Six years later, Ysam had relocated to Portland to escape Joseph and was living with an aunt when the fatal attack occurred. On July 19, Joseph allegedly stabbed Ysam in the home while nearly half a dozen children were present.
The 4-year-old daughter’s 911 call provided authorities with critical information. She reportedly told dispatchers, “My dad killed my mom.” Following that, Joseph himself reportedly called 911, stating he had stabbed a “loved one” but was unsure if she was still alive. He then fled the scene, leaving Ysam bleeding to death while the children remained inside.
Arrest and Charges
Joseph was arrested on July 22 in Clark County, Washington, and subsequently extradited to Multnomah County, Oregon, where he was booked into the county jail. During a court appearance on Thursday, Joseph entered a plea of not guilty to second-degree murder and burglary.
Authorities emphasized the gravity of the situation, noting that the children were safely taken into the custody of family members. The Portland Police Bureau confirmed that all five children, ranging in age from infancy to under six years old, were unharmed but remain under close supervision.
Community and Legal Response
This case has drawn attention to the long-term consequences of domestic violence. Legal experts note that Ysam’s efforts to flee her abuser highlight the challenges survivors face in securing lasting protection. Court proceedings will continue as investigators compile evidence and prepare for trial.
The ongoing investigation underscores the importance of rapid police response and the role that even the youngest witnesses can play in emergency situations. Authorities continue to remind the public that domestic violence prevention resources are available for those at risk.
Next Steps
Joseph remains in Multnomah County Jail, and the trial is pending. Police and court officials continue to handle the case with heightened sensitivity to the children involved.
