A 22-year-old Pace man was killed in a DUI accident Thursday night in Santa Rosa County.
Leslie Highstreet, 33, of Pace, was arrested and charged with DUI manslaughter and leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death.
The collision occurred around 9:45 p.m. on Woodbine Road near Oak Tree Lane. It blocked down the road for several hours.
According to Florida Highway Patrol, Highstreet’s pick-up truck was “traveling northbound in the continuous center turn lane, passing other vehicles, and then veered into the southbound lanes” before crashing head-on with the 22-year-old man’s sedan.
According to FHP, Highstreet fled the scene after witnesses helped him and his dog get out of the pickup truck.
“Responding deputies BOLO for [Highstreet] and found him and his dog southeast of the crash area,” according to the Florida Highway Patrol. “[Highstreet] resisted, so the deputy had to use his taser to restrain him. Later, the witness positively identified [Highstreet] as the driver of the pickup.”
He was taken to a hospital in Pensacola with minor injuries before being detained by the FHP.
“Deputies and troopers noticed the pick-up driver was extremely intoxicated,” according to FHP. “The driver declined to provide a blood sample at the hospital. [FHP] executed a warrant for a blood draw. [FHP] then took a blood sample at the hospital.”
Highstreet was booked at Escambia County Jail and will be extradited to Santa Rosa County Jail. His current mugshot has yet to be made accessible. WEAR News shows his mugshot from a 2010 arrest in Santa Rosa County.
The 22-year-old male was pronounced deceased at the scene. His identity has not been revealed.
