Cranford, NJ – A horrific tragedy unfolded in Cranford, New Jersey, on Monday night when two teenage girls riding e-bikes were allegedly struck and killed by a 17-year-old boy who had reportedly been stalking one of them for months. Family members and neighbors say the accused, Vincent P. Battiloro, “was parked outside her house for three months,” plotting the attack.
Alleged Attack Details
Prosecutors allege that Battiloro, turning 18 next month, deliberately ran over Maria Niotis and Isabella Salas in his Jeep Compass before fleeing the scene. Authorities have charged him with two counts of first-degree murder.
The girls were thrown more than 100 feet, and one of their e-bikes was reportedly dragged for about half a mile before dislodging. Both victims later died from their injuries at a local hospital.
“This was not an e-bike accident, and it was not a hit-and-run. This was murder in the first degree,” the families said in a joint statement.
Families Speak Out
The families described Battiloro as “a coward…who had been plotting this attack against Maria for months,” adding that he “is not insane, he is competent and meditated.” They emphasized the need for truth to be shared in the wake of the tragedy.
Stalking Allegations
Neighbors and relatives claimed that Maria was familiar with Battiloro and had been dealing with issues involving him, including stalking.
“He’s been parked outside her house for three months now. He was never stopped,” a resident told.
Police have not publicly addressed the stalking claims, but the accusations have fueled local outrage.
Police and Investigation Updates
Cranford Police confirmed that Battiloro, a resident of Garwood, was arrested Wednesday. Investigators say he is related to a Westfield police chief, though the chief clarified that the teen is not his son or immediate family.
“I unequivocally condemn the actions of the accused, and like you, I demand that he face the consequences of his alleged actions in a court of law,” said Chief Christopher Battiloro in a Facebook statement.
Community Reaction
Residents and family members have expressed shock and grief over the loss of two young lives. Many criticized the authorities for not intervening despite alleged warning signs and ongoing stalking.
“While social media has made it known that the accused is related to me, he is not my son and not a member of my immediate family…in NO WAY do my wife, children or I condone, defend, or excuse the actions that caused this terrible and tragic loss of life,” the chief added.
Ongoing Legal Process
Battiloro remains in custody, facing first-degree murder charges for both victims. The case is expected to proceed through the New Jersey court system, where prosecutors will present evidence of premeditation.
Safety Reminder for Community
Authorities urge families and teens to remain vigilant when it comes to stalking or harassment situations, reporting any suspicious behavior promptly to law enforcement.
