According to Houston city officials, the boy had been participating in a game known as “doorbell ditch”—a prank where participants ring a doorbell and then quickly run away. The shooting occurred in the 9700 block of Racine Street, just an hour before midnight.
Witnesses reported seeing the boy run from a house after ringing the doorbell, shortly before he was shot.
“A witness stated the male was running from a house, after ringing the doorbell, just prior to suffering a gunshot wound,” said the city’s official statement.
Emergency responders arrived at the scene and rushed the boy to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead on Sunday.

The shooting prompted a swift response from local authorities, who detained a person for questioning. However, that individual was released shortly after the investigation.
