HOUSTON, TX– A tragic shooting unfolded in Houston when a 17-year-old accidentally shot and killed a 10-year-old girl who was sleeping in her home, authorities confirmed this week.
According to reports, the teenager was reportedly “playing” with a firearm when it discharged, striking the young girl in the head. The incident occurred around midnight on July 29 inside a residence located in the Southwest Inn Apartments.
Deadly Mistake Claims Young Life
Officials from the Harris County Sheriff’s Office said the teen was visiting the home and was handling the gun carelessly when it went off. The girl, whose name has not been released, died instantly.
- The firearm was allegedly unsecured and accessible
- The 17-year-old fled the scene but later turned himself in
- Authorities are determining whether the shooting was truly accidental
“This is a heartbreaking and preventable tragedy,” said Sheriff Ed Gonzalez. “A young life has been lost because of a deadly combination of recklessness and access to firearms.”
Community in Shock
Residents of the apartment complex held a candlelight vigil in the girl’s memory. Community leaders and activists renewed their call for gun safety education and secure firearm storage laws.
Investigation Ongoing
The teen suspect has been taken into custody, and charges are pending as the investigation continues. Prosecutors are weighing manslaughter or negligent homicide charges.
