1 Dead, 1 Hospitalized After Boat Capsizes on Lake Michigan Near Hammond

One man died and another was hospitalized Friday afternoon after their boat sank on Lake Michigan in Hammond, Indiana, according to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office.

According to the office, around 1:30 p.m., the Marine and Aviation Units responded to a complaint about an overturned boat on Lake Michigan near the East Chicago steel mill, which was about a mile offshore.

A man from the boat made it to shore and was sent to a nearby hospital in unclear condition. According to the office, a kind Samaritan grabbed him onto their boat and transported him to shore. At the moment, the second boater was missing.

First responders discovered the missing guy, 73, in the water and proclaimed him dead.

The two were believed to be fishing when the boat capsized owing to heavy gusts and rough seas, according to the office.

Several agencies aided in the rescue.

No other information was immediately provided.
