The South Carolina House and Senate are expanding the tax break for firefighters. This was approved by Governor Henry McMaster last week and is now official.
The Professional Firefighters Of SC said that the last raise was more than 15 years ago, and this one is keeping more money in the pockets of people who work in public safety.
President of the Johns Island Professional Fire Fighters Association (JIPFFA), Sean Foulois, said, “It gives us a little break while we fight the low wages in the state. You know, so any help we can get that will improve public safety is a huge win.”
Last week, Governor Henry McMaster signed Tax Reduction Act S0969 into law for police and firemen.
“With this new tax cut, the daily wage for professional firefighters goes up from $8 to $16. There are about 7,500 of them in South Carolina.” “This is also different because it gives you a bigger tax break,” said John Baker, Director of Government Relations for the Professional Fire Fighters Association of South Carolina.
A group called Professional Firefighters Of SC said it was a small but helpful step in the right way. They also said that their volunteers would be taken care of.
The tax credit for volunteering will go up to $6,000. This will have a big effect on people. “They will be able to deduct twice as much from their state income tax, which will put a lot more money in their pockets,” Baker said.
“We keep people safe in our communities, and we’re a strong force.” As the saying goes, “We’re all in this together” and need to work together to get more of these perks for people who work in public safety, like police. Foulois said, “Any benefit or law that can be passed that will help all of us is a win for the whole state.”
